The beam draws a rectangle but how does that become a detailed moving picture? By varying the amount of electrons sent to the electron gun, the image increases or decreases intensity at each point on the screen. More electrons mean a brighter dot, and fewer mean a darker dot. The short impulses at the end of each line indicate to the electron gun to start a new line, and a long impulse means to reset the electron gun back to the top of the screen.
